Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Road Transport by 2050: Reaffirmation by the Automobile Industry

April 4, 2023 – In November 2022, as global policymakers prepared to gather at the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt, the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) released a position paper titled “Carbon Neutrality by 2050” a comprehensive framework of specific policy recommendations to support the decarbonization of road transport.

For automakers around the world, decarbonizing road transport is a shared goal to which they are committed. However, as the OICA framework emphasizes, there is a need for flexibility through multiple, technology-open approaches in order to provide practical and sustainable pathways to carbon neutrality by 2050 for all nations. In order to achieve carbon neutrality, measures to reduce CO2 emissions from new vehicles, and also from in-use vehicles, must be pursued. To that end, it is important that technologies be advanced across a spectrum; for zero-emission vehicles (ie. battery and fuel cell electric vehicles) which emit no direct CO2, and for internal combustion engine-equipped vehicles powered by CO2-offsetting energy such as carbon-neutral fuels.

Regardless of the technologies adopted, achieving decarbonization within the 2050 timeframe depends on government and industry partnerships and continued investment commitments from the entire road transport ecosystem for reliable infrastructure and resilient supply chains.

As representatives of the global automobile industry, taking into consideration the current global geo-political and socio-economic situation, we believe that this reaffirmation to achieve carbon neutrality in our sector by 2050 is timely.

L’industrie automobile réaffirme son objectif d’atteindre la neutralité carbone en 2050.

    4 avril 2023 –    A l’occasion  de la COP 27, Conférence des Nations sur les changements climatiques, qui s’est tenue en Egypte en novembre 2022, l’Organisation internationale des constructeurs automobiles (OICA) a publié ses recommandations pour accompagner la décarbonation du transport routier, dans un document intitulé « La neutralité carbone d’ici 2050« .

          La décarbonation du transport routier est un objectif vers lequel tendent tous les constructeurs automobiles. Cependant, comme le souligne l’OICA, il faut impérativement laisser une certaine flexibilité dans le choix des technologies pour atteindre cette décarbonation. Toutes les mesures nécessaires pour réduire les émissions de CO2 des véhicules neufs comme ceux du parc circulant doivent être envisagées. Mais pour atteindre cet objectif, il est essentiel que les technologies employées soient multiples et aussi diversifiées que possible afin de proposer des solutions fiables et durables à cet horizon. Pour y parvenir, un spectre large de solutions technologiques doit être retenu, intégrant les véhicules zéro émission (véhicules électriques à batterie et à pile à combustible), et les véhicules équipés d’un moteur thermique alimentés par des énergies décarbonées comme les carburants neutre en carbone.

Quelles que soient les technologies adoptées, l’atteinte de la neutralité carbone en 2050 dépendra d’un partenariat étroit entre les pouvoirs publics et la filière industrielle, mais aussi des investissements continus de l’ensemble de l’écosystème du transport routier pour des infrastructures fiables et des chaînes d’approvisionnement résilientes.

          En tant que représentants de l’industrie automobile mondiale, compte tenu de la situation géopolitique et du contexte socio-économique mondiale actuel, nous réaffirmons cette nécessité de neutralité carbone dans notre secteur pour l’objectif 2050.
